Germany plans to reduce the number of traffic restrictions

  • July 21, 2026

Germany plans to lift traffic bans and restrictions that apply on public holidays in different regions of the country. The aim is to make route planning easier and to standardise traffic restrictions across different regions.

This law has not yet been officially approved by the government, but once it takes effect, traffic bans and restrictions would apply only on national holidays. The current system causes problems for drivers who can drive freely in one region but, upon crossing into another region, face traffic bans and disruptions due to local restrictions in effect there. This problem arises during holidays such as Corpus Christ, All Saints’ Day, Reformation Day, and so on. Traffic restrictions during these holidays apply only in certain regions of Germany.

Once the law takes effect, restrictions of this nature would be lifted. Traffic bans on national holidays and Sundays—in effect from midnight until 10:00 p.m. and applicable to vehicles weighing more than 7.5 metric tons—would remain in place across all regions.
