The authorities in France’s Grand Est region have decided to follow in the footsteps of the Alsace region, where new road tolls for heavy-duty vehicles are planned to be introduced starting in 2027.
The amount of the new road tolls will depend on the distance traveled. The tolls will apply to heavy-duty vehicles weighing more than 3.5 tons. Although the exact date of implementation has not been announced, the new regulations are expected to take effect in early 2027.
Importantly, once the new tolls are introduced, they will also apply to the A31 highway – one of the region’s most important roads, particularly for international carriers and drivers. The A31 is one of the most important north-south corridors in Europe, connecting Luxembourg with Lorraine and the Rhône Valley. This change would result in higher operating costs for carriers using the highway.
In the Greater East region, the decision to implement these reforms was made for the same reasons as in Alsace—in recent years, local roads have seen a particularly high volume of international traffic, and the aim is to ensure that sufficient funds are collected to carry out road maintenance work and other infrastructure projects.
