Traffic restrictions in Düsseldorf

  • February 4, 2026

Starting February 1, new traffic restrictions have been introduced in the city of Düsseldorf – from now on, heavy goods vehicles are completely prohibited from using the Theodor–Heuss Bridge. This restriction applies to vehicles weighing more than 3.5 tonnes.

The Theodor–Heuss Bridge was built back in 1957 and is significantly damaged, which is why major reconstruction works have been initiated.

Vehicles approaching from the western side (the left bank of the Rhine River) are advised to use the A52 or A57 motorways. Alternatively, it is also possible to drive through the city via the Rheinknie Bridge.

Vehicles approaching from the eastern side are advised to use the B8–Danziger Straße bypass, which can be accessed via the A44 motorway. Alternatively, drivers are recommended to take the B1 road and cross the Rheinknie Bridge.
