On September 18, France will be the scene of one of the largest trade union demonstrations in recent years — from teachers to transport sector employees, thousands of people will gather in the streets of cities across the country. Approximately 250 demonstrations will take place nationwide against the government’s new reforms, including cuts to social benefits, a reduction in the number of legal public holidays, and other changes. As a result, drivers will face unexpected traffic restrictions throughout France.

Traffic in Paris, Lyon, and Marseille is expected to become more difficult, with congestion on ring roads and highways, potentially extending travel times by several hours. Truck drivers may encounter unexpected police checks and may have difficulty reaching local logistics centers.

In Paris, the biggest challenges for drivers will be access to Boulevard Périphérique, nearby ports, and logistics hubs. In Lyon, major congestion is expected on the A6 and A7 motorways, while in Marseille, traffic jams are anticipated on roads leading to ports and on the city’s main ring road. Drivers should also expect restrictions on the A1, A7, A10, A31, and A45 motorways.

Reports indicate that the protests will also significantly affect rail and air traffic — warnings have been issued regarding flight and train delays, as well as possible cancellations.
