On July 1, 2026, road tolls in the Flanders region of Belgium will increase by 27%. Drivers will face these changes due to a new law stipulating that toll rates will now also depend on the vehicle’s CO2 emission class. Road tolls in this region apply to vehicles weighing more than 3.5 tons.
Carriers will have to self-declare their vehicles’ CO2 class. The majority of diesel-powered vehicles (falling between the EURO 0 and EURO 6 categories) fall into CO2 Class 1. However, since some vehicles of this type consume significantly less fuel, they may be classified as Class 2 or Class 3 vehicles.
In April, a special calculation tool will be launched on the website of the toll collection company Viapass (viapass.be), allowing users to determine which CO2 class a vehicle belongs to. To use this tool, the user will need to have a registration certificate, a customer data file, and a certificate of conformity. The tool will then generate a document containing all the necessary information about the vehicle’s CO2 class.
